Balance Beam

Evaluation of sensorimotor coordination

The balance beam test scores the ability of mice to traverse a stationary horizontal rod. Sensorimotor coordination is measured by the latency to cross the beam and the number of foot slips made.

Motor dysfunction affects balance beam performance

Vanishing white matter (VWM) is a fatal leukoencephalopathy caused by mutations in any of the five genes encoding translation initiation factor eIF2B. VWM is clinically characterized a.o. by chronic progressive motor dysfunction. In collaboration with our partners, we studied an Eif2b5 knockout mutant (Dooves et al., 2016) that showed clear deficits on this task.
