Running wheel activity

running wheel activity actogramVoluntary activity in a running wheel

When housed in a cage that is equipped with a running wheel (blue cylinder in the figure), mice will voluntarily start running in it. After approximately 5 – 10 days, this voluntary wheel running behavior will stabilize and show a typical dark/light activity pattern.

In Sylics’ setup, rotations are detected with a magnetic system and transmitted to a PC and collected at high temporal resolution. Data is subsequently analyzed with Sylics’ proprietary AHCODA software to generate parameters of activity and circadian rhythm as displayed in the figure.

Wheel running in pharmacological studies

Voluntary wheel running can be used to assess the physical performance, endurance and general health of mice. Also, providing access to a running wheel can be used to model exercise training. This setup is therefore useful to detect pharmacological effects on activity, circadian rhythm and endurance.
